Bonolo Helen Chepape is a 27-year-old textile and surface designer and founder of the décor and textile consulting studio Lulasclan, all the way from the small, dusty mining town of Rustenburg in the North West Province.
At her very core is the firm belief in the preservation of culture and heritage. Her love for different cultures is her blueprint, and it aids her in her creative process. She loves seeing culture evolve, be reinterpreted, be reimagined, and be passed on to the next generation without losing its essence or key meaning in the process.
In the four short years in which she has been pursuing her passion (after leaving the profession of graphic design), she has been very fortunate to work with some of South Africa’s leading brands, including Nando’s, MRP Home, and Smeg. Honours include best textile design at 100% Design South Africa 2018 and the Future Found Award 2019. In her bold, colourful, fun, and quirky work, Bonolo turns art into functional objects of beauty, using them as vehicles in which to tell her story through patterns that embrace heritage and cultural difference, celebrating the coming together of Western design aesthetics interwoven with African contemporary design. Bonolo believes in trusting the process because it is within the smallest details that magical surprises are found.
